How to clean spills and stains

Artificial grass has a whole host of benefits, but one that draws a lot of people to them is their stain resistance. Artificial lawns are meant to be lived with – meaning drinks might be spilled or food, drips from plates or chewing gum may accidentally end up falling onto the grass.

Luckily, the majority of stains can be cleaned with a quick rinse of water (or even rain!)

However if residue remains after hosing off the area, you can use a mild, natural soap with warm water . To clean stains caused by pet mess, a half-and-half mix of vinegar and water is ideal, especially as it great at removing bacteria.

the key to cleaning spills is to respond quickly

When spills are still in liquid form, they can be washed away very easily, meaning little effort to remove them effectively.

With sticky substances such as chewing gum or sweets, these can be cleaned by simply picking them up with a tissue. However, if the sticky item is being particularly difficult to remove, you can try washing it with an ice cube. Another way to clean sticky spills is to use a dull object, such as a plastic knife, however you must take care to ensure the synthetic fibres do not tear.

Do not use harsh chemicals to clean spills or remove stains

Some spills and stains are very stubborn, do not be tempted to use chemicals, as these are very likely to damage the artificial fibres. Products such as bleach can change the colour of artificial grass, making the problem even worse.

how to remove stubborn stains from artificial grass?

In summary, our five step guide to cleaning spills and stains from artificial grass is as follows:

1. Act Quickly

Act quickly – as previously mentioned, you should always try and clean the spillage as soon as it happens. Leaving spills to harden will make them harder to remove.

2. Soak it up

Wipe/soak up liquids with a clean cloth or kitchen towel. If you have some to hand, cat litter also works well to soak up large spills to its high absorption properties

3. use washing up liquid

If there is still a stain, mix a small amount of washing up liquid and lukewarm water together and apply to the affected area with a synthetic bristled brush, clean cloth or sponge.

4. thoroughly clean the area

Work the solution inbetween and around the stained artificial fibres. Once the stubborn stain has been removed, rinse the area thoroughly with water.

5. scrape off hardened spillages

If the spillage has hardened, you may need to use a plastic knife to scrape it off, however you must take care to ensure the synthetic fibres do not tear. Alternatively, you could try using an old toothbrush to gently brush the hardened stain off the grass, then carry out steps 2 to 4.
